Espace Claude-Henri-Grignon

Tribute to an author, scriptwriter, journalist, and politician

The author of an impactful work

This space is entirely dedicated to the author of the novel “Un homme et son péché (or A man and his sin)” and the famous historical saga that portrays colonial customs and ways of thinking.

The book, now a Quebec literary classic, was immensely successful, and subsequently transformed into a radio novel from 1939 to 1962, a telenovel from 1956 to 1970 titled “Les belles histoires des Pays d’en Haut (Stories of the Northern Townships)” and a TV show, “Les Pays d’en Haut (The Northern Townships)” from 2016 to 2021.

From radio to film

Adapted for the theatre from 1942 to 1953, and for the big screen in 1949, 1950, and 2002, the work lives on. Just like the Village of Séraphin, named after the protagonist of the book, which operated in Sainte-Adèle from 1967 to 1997.

The author who popularized the Laurentians

A monumental work that brought the Laurentians, and more specifically Sainte-Adèle, its birthplace, into the public eye. Featuring fictional and historical characters, the show generated lots of interest from a people that sometimes struggled to differentiate between reality and fiction! That’s why the Radio-Canada studios received a spool of black thread and stamps in the mail for the attention of the female protagonist, Donalda!

As for Séraphin, his iconic greed led to the expression to pull a Séraphin, which means to be stingy, both of which are part of the local vernacular!

The Maison de la culture

The fine arts-style building, home to the Maison de la culture, was recognized as a heritage monument by the provincial government in 1975. Though it served as a courthouse from 1924 to 1969, the vaults and the prison are now the Espace Claude-Henri-Grignon, the Antony-Lessard performance hall, the Musée d’art contemporain des Laurentides, and the Marie-Antoinette-Foucher library.
