14th Century Belfry of Fougere

A Belfry Dating Back to 1397

The Belfry’s Gargoyles

These gargoyles allowed the evacuation of rain water from the roofs. Not only are they gutters, they are also works of art. They often represent dragons, a Gothic tradition common in the Middle Ages (although the first gargoyles appeared long before that, during the Antiquity).

Behind this gargoyle, Fougères’s belfry’s bells give the rhythm to the city, as they have for the past 600 years.
