House of Arts and Crafts, Four Square

141-147, avenue Carter

Built in 1937, this four-unit apartment building features the Arts et Métiers and Four Square styles. Its sloped roof rests on a central section and two side wings, in the style of 18th-century manor. Its wings feature sloping windows. Its side entrances provide openings in the façade, while the porches create a sense of rhythm, and it balances the projecting volumes.

Historical Significance

Its answer lies in the skillful execution of the architectural style. The use of the imposing manor-style structure allowed the residential units to be integrated in a simple yet ingenious way. Dating from 1937, this four-unit building is part of the planned city of Noranda.

The Roof and Windows

The hipped roof, consisting of four slopes, was the perfect choice for covering the wings of this Four Square style building. Note the shape of the windows on the upper floor and on the facades of the side wings. These are what are known as sloping windows, as their lower section sits below the roof cornice, thus breaking up the roofline.

Finishing materials

The excellent state of preservation of this four-unit building allows us to appreciate the quality of its original brick and stucco finishes, which are not only representative of the period in which it was built, but also of the Anglo-Saxon influence of the architects of the planned city of Noranda.

She's seen a lot!

In the background of this photo, you can see the four-unit building, which has changed very little, as well as the neighboring building to its right. Notice how the building has been modified by the addition of a veranda on both the ground and the upper floor.
