Synagogue

18, 9e rue

Built in 1948, this Romanesque Revival style synagogue features a projecting central section and semicircular openings. The Star of David is located in the oculus, and the projecting tympanum bears the inscription 'Kneseth Israel' (Jewish House). A Hebrew inscription, carved into the black stone, is located on the right side of the facade.

The synagogue's imposing size demonstrates the significant role the Jewish community, though small, played in the town's development at the time. Furthermore, it is a virtually unique example of a synagogue outside the Montreal area.

Historical Significance

Its value lies in its history and certain architectural features. Its legacy lies in the multiethnic character of Noranda. The synagogue has not been used for worship since 1972. It is worth noting that a wooden synagogue built in 1932 once stood on this site before the current building was built.

The oculus and the tympanum

Located right in the center, take a look at the oculus featuring the Star of David. Below it,  you'll find the tympanum bearing the name of the congregation, as well as the year the synagogue was built. An interesting fact, shared by a descendant of the Korman family, is that the nine windows on the facade refers to the menorah, the nine-branched candelabrum used by Jews during the celebration of Hanukkah.

The founder's plaque

On the far right of the facade, you'll find a plaque with inscriptions, including the name Michael Korman. Not only was he the man who had this synagogue built, but the Korman family was also very prominent in the Jewish community at the time.

The Wooden Synagogue

Here you can see the old wooden synagogue built in 1932. Note in the background the vast vacant lot, now occupied by the Dave Keon Arena.

What a Sight!

In 1951, with its original Boomtown facade now gone, the synagogue looked magnificent.
