Cloutier

Cloutier... a paradise for water sports!

The Jean-Marie-Turcotte Arena, which you’re standing in front of—inaugurated on March 11, 2016—is the pride of the neighborhood! In addition to the arena, the building houses a community hall on the second floor, perfect for hosting various gatherings. On the facade, take a moment to admire the stunning artwork by Brigitte Toutant titled “Reverbération.”

The photo shown here depicts the old arena, built in 1962 by the villagers, who contributed part of their paychecks and a great deal of their time to the project! The outdated structure was demolished in 2015 to make way for the stunning glued-laminated timber building you see before you!

If you love water sports, the Cloutier neighborhood is perfect for you! With its six lakes and rivers, there’s no shortage of bodies of water in this area. There’s even an esker running along the west side of Route 391! Whether you explore it by road or by water, this neighborhood is definitely worth discovering!

The first rectory, a rather rudimentary building!

Although it may seem rudimentary, this is a far cry from the first settlers’ homes, built of unsquared logs! The village priest was expected to have decent accommodations, and often his house was built even before the church was.

The village nurse!

Here you can see Cloutier’s first nurse, Mrs. Mathilde Beaumier, between 1935 and 1942. Since she had to travel throughout the area she served—and sometimes even on emergency calls—the nurse needed a mode of transportation suited to the conditions of the time, when road construction often came second.

Artwork - Hiver d'antan

The photograph that inspired this winter scene depicts Cloutier’s first rectory at the beginning of the settlement. The surrounding landscape is an interpretation born of the artist’s imagination, drawn from her childhood memories.
