We’re now standing in front of the Trépanier Residence. This neo-gothic inspired Victorian home belonged to this family for nearly 70 years. The gables, dormers, bay windows, the finials, numerous wooden ornaments and the oriel are typical of the style. The property was built after Edward N. Robinson, General Manager of the West Farnham Branch of the Eastern Townships Bank, acquired part of a lot in the Farnham Township in 1882. It’s possible that he managed the bank’s office at this location for a few years.

Starting in 1892, a merchant by the name of George E. Loud owned the house until Bertram Allen Planche, a dentist, took possession of it in 1910. Thirteen years later, Olivier Trépanier, a dentist as well, purchased it and added some adjacent lots in 1960. Dr. Trépanier, his wife and their heirs owned the property until June 1993.

Did you know that Dr. Trépanier was very active in the community? In fact, he was a Farnham municipal councillor from 1946 to 1952, and then was elected mayor from 1952 to 1955. During this time, he was also involved in the school system, serving as a school commissioner for ten years before taking over as president of the school board for seven years.

Olivier Trépanier’s family descendants have also always been quite involved in the region’s community at different levels.
His oldest son, Paul-Olivier, an architect, settled in Granby where he opened his own firm. He was elected mayor of Granby for two mandates, first from 1964 to 1969 and later from 1973 to 1985. Among his first accomplishments, he designed the Zoo de Granby’s geodesic dome.

His second son Marc-R., like his father, became a dentist, a profession he practised for forty-five years in Farnham. He was president of the Société dentaire Yamaska and a founding member of the Académie dentaire du Québec. He passed away in 2007 and was laid to rest in Farnham.
Pierre, Marc-R.’s son, also became a dentist and practised here for several years.

The Clinique dentaire Olivier Trépanier Inc. was built in 1974 on one of the house’s adjacent lots, and to this day still welcomes patients.
