Place Carnot

A Meeting Place Through the Centuries

A meeting place of choice for its inhabitants, this very lively location houses several shops, such as restaurants and cafés.

Periodically, there are also flowers, fruits and vegetable markets under the shades of the magnificent plane trees on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings.

At the beginning

Place Carnot was originally more imposing than it is now. About 700 years ago, it extended to the Verdun, de l'Aigle d'or and Pinel streets. In other words, there were no southern, northern, or eastern buildings at the time.

In 1355, the Black Prince's army (Prince of Wales of England) looted and set the Bastide on fire. Nothing remained standing, and the reconstruction of the place was later undertaken in its current area.

The Neptune Fountain

The Neptune fountain, located at the center of Place Carnot, was completed in 1770 by the Baratas, father and son, both Italian sculptors.

There are two naiads and tritons on the base, as well as dolphins whose nostrils let out many water jets. Those symbols stem from the mythology at the time. They are surmounted by mascarons and wreaths, in the middle of which is a statue of Neptune, from which comes an abundant water source running along the monument.
