Bellevue Garden

Along the River

Aude is a river of over 200 kilometers that goes through Carcassonne. It's a tributary of the Hérault River and an important part of the local history.

Creation of the Bellevue Garden

Before the town decided to create a public garden on the edge of the Quai Bellevue in 1995, the land was occupied by kitchen gardens belonging to several owners. The water of the river was used to water them.

Aude

The river played a key role in the defense of the town over the past centuries, because it surrounded the Medieval City of Carcassonne and was used as a natural ditch.

Excursion on the Aude

It is possible to go on a cruise on the Aude from Carcassonne, to admire the surrounding landscapes and discover the history of the city and the region. The cruises are often accompanied by an audio commentary, available in several languages.

Aude is also a famous fishing ground. There are species such as trout, pike-perch, and northern pike.
