Entrance to the Medieval City

An Exceptional Heritage

The Medieval City of Carcassonne represents an exceptional heritage, preserved through passion, knowledge, and poetry. It is one of the most important examples of this kind in Europe. It symbolizes the history and the culture of an entire region, in addition to being a popular tourist attraction placed on UNESCO's World Heritage.

Over 2000 Years of History

The site's history is even older than the existing walls of its fortress. There was a Roman city a century before Christ! It became part of the Trencavel in 1082.  The City was then reinforced over the centuries by the counts of Carcassonne.

Among the Best Preserved Medieval Fortresses

Carcassonne is one of the strongholds of the Cathar resistance, a people often attacked during the Crusades in the 13th century. This is why the City was reinforced with defense towers and more imposing walls, as we can still see nowadays.

About

The fortress is divided into two main parts: the Count's Castle, which is the heart of the city, and all of the public space between the castle and the murals surrounding the City.

The fortifications are made up of two walls with towers and barbicans.

Carcassonne is an exceptional example of medieval architecture. The City has churches, ramparts, cobbled streets, several gardens, and wonderful public places. It is sometimes used for events such as festivals, concerts, and fireworks.
