The Bailey Avenue bridge serves as the entrance to Montpelier's Capitol Complex. It is graced with electric “gas lamps”. Programmable lights wrapped around the poles of each of the nine lamps create verticality and drama. Evoking an earlier time, they set the stage for a visit to Vermont's historic capital city.
Bailey Avenue is the newest bridge in downtown Montpelier. It was built in 1958 to accommodate traffic coming into town from the new Interstate.
Prior to its construction, temporary wooden bridges provided access to the recreational fields where the high school is today.
Unfortunately, this bridge was built low over the Winooski. Its two supporting piers collect debris when the water is running high, creating dams. As a result, Bailey Avenue and lower State Street are some of the first places in Montpelier to flood.
