The chapel and the church

Church of Saint-Alfred

The Church of Saint-Alfred, built in 1931. Father Eusèbe Labbé, during the assembly of the churchwardens of the Fabrique, adopted a resolution to borrow an amount of $25,000 at 5% interest. The architect Charles Dumais prepared the plans for this church, a building 120 feet long by 50 feet wide.

The construction contract was awarded to a contractor from Saint-Victor for the amount of $28,490, being the lowest bid. To supplement the financing, the churchwardens organized activities such as dance evenings, games, card games, and bake sales. The first priests of the parish of Saint-Alfred were Pamphile Roy (January to October 1926), Horace Labrecque (1926 to 1928), Eusèbe Labbé (1928 to 1935), Napoléon Gariépy (1935 to 1936), Charles-Eugène Langelier (1936 to 1943), and Arthur Nadeau (1943 to 1953).

Currently, masses are held there from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. every other Sunday.

The Chapel 1915-1931

The parish authorities of Saint-François decided to build a chapel to adequately serve the residents of the Sainte-Marie area and its surroundings. It was constructed next to the current church on a plot measuring 275 feet by 200 feet, donated by Alfred Veilleux. When it was demolished, the windows were given to the parish of Saint-René. In its early years, Saint-Alfred was served through a mission, meaning by the presence of a missionary. The first resident priest, Father Pamphile Roy, had to make do with a chapel for his religious services.

The Inner Chapel

Common at the time, this chapel was built in 1915 through a collective effort. Ludger, Adélard Fecteau, and Majorique Gilbert greatly contributed to the work. The Fecteau sawmills provided a large supply of all kinds of wood. During religious services, parishioners with talent took care of the choir in the chapel. Notably, the presence of Odilon Fecteau and Siméon Veilleux is highlighted. At the time, they sang a chant equivalent to Gregorian, called the 'pain-chant.'
