Neoclassical house - Craftsman bungalow

9, avenue Murdoch

Built in 1936, this house stands out for its style and features architecture typical of 1950s American suburban catalogs. Its large lot is beautifully landscaped, and a diagonal walkway leads to the front door, which is set behind neatly trimmed evergreens.

Notice on the left side of the upper floor the massive gable-pediment structure, extending over more than two-thirds of the facade’s roof and simultaneously encompassing the projecting porch. Note the side transoms on either side of the door.

Historical Significance

This house has significant historical interest despite its apparent architectural anachronism. The imposing gable front identifies it with the Neoclassical style, while the dormer windows on the roof suggest a Craftsman bungalow style.

The skylights

Note the dormer on this residence, which pierce the roof at the front, rear, and left sides. This type of roof opening is called a sloping dormer or a dormer window, as opposed to a shed dormer where the slope runs in the opposite direction to the roof pitch. In this case, the dormers have a flat, single-sloped roof whose slope follows the same direction as the main roof, but with a gentler incline. Hence the name sloping dormer or shed dormer.

Two other differences are noticeable on the facade compared to today. Can you identify them?

In the foreground, between the residence we're focusing on and Dr. Linklater's house, you'll see a house that no longer exists. If you look closely, you'll also notice some changes in the background of the image.
