Reformed Baptist Church

6, 9e rue

This wooden church was built in 1934-1935. It features a simple rectangular design. Its projecting portico has a semicircular doorway. The windows on the front facade are also semicircular and feature mullions and transoms, while the side facades have straight lintels.

Historical Significance

Its significance lies in its age and its representation of a society tolerant of different faiths. This church is still open for worship and is the oldest in the region to have retained its original denomination. Its small size and simplicity are undoubtedly contributing factors to its continued use, as the costs of its upkeep and maintenance are much lower than for a cathedral, for example.

A breathtaking view!

Taken from the roof of the former Youville Hospital, this photo offers a magnificent view of the Noranda neighbourhood, as well as the reformed Baptist Church. Note the absence of the house that now stands at the corner of rue Trémoy and 9e rue. Since that house was built in 1938, there is no doubt that this photo was taken before that time.
