All Saints Church

35, avenue Frédéric-Hébert

Built between 1926 and 1928 in a barely developed area, this church is in a very simple vernacular Gothic style. In 1952, it was remodeled to give it its current appearance. On its front and rear facades, the windows feature pointed arches, while those on the sides and on the bell tower feature Tudor arches. Each window is decorated with various types of mullions and transoms, and the bell tower pointed roof is topped with battlements.

Historical Significance

This Anglican church served as a social gathering place and a business centre for the English-speaking community of Rouyn-Noranda. Over the years, it has welcomed worshippers of various faiths, even from its earliest days when some congregations did not yet have their own place of worship. Now occupied by the Christian congregation, it still remains open.

Verticality and battlements

To some, the bell tower resembles a castle turret, hence the Gothic style of the church, which is also evident in the shape of the various openings. These jagged details at the base of the bell tower's spire are what we call battlements. If you look closely through the slats of the openings in the bell tower, you might just spot the historic bell dating from 1825, which originated from Manchester, England!

Before remodeling

Although somewhat worn from having been handled so many times over the years, this photo clearly shows the original layout of the church, prior to the 1952 renovations. Note the absence of the bell tower and the very simple design of the windows.
