"Citizen Vocation and Hazards of the City" by Jonathan Fortier

Civic vocation: A character who seems to be playing hide and seek

Placed on the roof of the Maison du Citoyen in Gatineau (the city hall), the sculpture Civic vocation by artist Jonathan Fortier features a playful character who seems to be playing hide and seek. This simple and playful gesture acts as an allegory for civic involvement.

The artwork reminds us that participating in community life doesn't require grand actions, but rather a willingness to positively influence one's environment. Coming out of hiding symbolizes the moment when a citizen decides, or becomes aware of the possibility, to engage and take part in the mechanisms that influence their surroundings.

"Hazards of the City"

At the foot of the Citizen's House, three figures appear frozen after a fall. This other creation by Jonathan Fortier reminds us that living in a community means learning to navigate a structured, sometimes restrictive environment. Citizens adapt and manage to find happiness. Falls, whether real or symbolic, are part of this shared experience.

Their postures evoke the fragility and constant effort needed to move forward, reminding us that collective life is also built through trials and perseverance.

About the Artist

Jonathan Fortier's artistic approach is rooted in a desire to play with contrasts and explore the inherent meaning of things. At the heart of his work is the pursuit of a playful spirit and constant playfulness, inviting the viewer to maintain a childlike perspective and rediscover the world from a fresh angle.

He focuses on diverting images and giving them new meaning. His creative process involves leaving simple clues for the audience through strong and immediately recognizable visuals, while encouraging reflection. Far from imposing a single meaning, the artist wants the viewer to question, bring their own interpretation, and thus become an integral part of the final composition of the work.

Visually

His work often juxtaposes the carefree and naive beauty of the initial image with the coldness of the real world. It is in this gap, in this friction between lightness and gravity, that creative tension arises. The aim is to spark a play of ideas, provoking an encounter between aesthetics and critical thinking, allowing everyone to see—or see for the first time—the complexity of our environment.

An Immediate Visual Impact

In an era where art often carries political discourse or excessive intellectualization, the artist opts for spontaneity and instinct. His work returns to the beauty of simplicity and the clarity of gesture. He favors an immediate visual impact, an experience that is felt before it is understood, fostering a direct connection with the viewer, while still being meaningful.
