From the Forbidden Fruit to the Technological Fruit

The Fruits of the Tree of Knowledge by Roylu is a work that references the creation story of the Abrahamic religions and the common interpretation of the apple, particularly in the Christian tradition, as the fruit that God forbade consumption of. 

A technological fruit

Let's fast forward to the fruit of this work, which is now the name of a major tech company whose flagship product is a powerful computer that also serves as a phone. This device, along with other similar gadgets, is more powerful than those that accompanied humanity's first steps on the Moon, with capabilities that amplify the ethical dilemmas related to technology. Like the apple from the garden, this technological fruit also presents itself as a potential, entering the realm of reality only when used or activated with a simple gesture, a flip of a switch, or a press of a power button, even though, undoubtedly, the ethical implications are already closely tied to its manufacturing process.

About the Artist

Roy Lu, originally from the Philippines, emigrated here in the fall of 2007. Almost immediately upon his arrival in the Ottawa/Gatineau region, he actively participated in the artistic scene, particularly with the Gatineau-based performance collective, Fait Maison. His first significant performance piece in Canada was "Last Supper/La dernière Cène" in the summer of 2008, as part of Galerie 101's summer art festival, Time2, which earned him a nomination for a 2008 Golden Cherry Award in the Best Performance Artist category.
