You stand before one of the most beautiful public buildings in the Eastern Townships: the Town Hall of the Municipality of Bolton-Est. Erected in 1868, the building showcases the neoclassical architecture of New England settlers. It was designed to be used for multiple purposes: administration, municipal court, Sunday worship, dances, concerts, gatherings and school.
The Bolton-Est Town Hall was designated as a national historic site of Canada in 1984 and recognized by the Municipality as a heritage property in 2012.
Like many of the other villages in the region, Bolton-Est experienced a demographic and economic boom in 1866, thanks to its copper mine, which in turn brought the arrival of the railway. Yet, a mere ten years later, the falling price of copper - a direct consequence of the American Civil War - led to the mine’s closure.
Continuing south along your route will lead you to Spa Bolton. Located at the base of the falls of the North Missisquoi River, it is built precisely on the site of the former J.C. Willard sawmill, in operation until 1907. The spa welcomes thousands of visitors every year, offering a year-round thermal experience with access to both the natural waterfall and water bath.
