HISTORICAL CONTEXT

In 1920 and 1922, Edmund Horne discovered promising copper and gold deposits on the shores of Lake Osisko. This discovery sparked a thriving mining activity. From then on, in the early 1920s, the Noranda Company began planning the town of Noranda, located at the foot of the Horne smelter.

Drawn by the mining discoveries, people from everywhere soon settled on the other side of Lake Osisko. The camps erected there gave birth to the town of Rouyn, developed without precise planning. The sister towns grew each according to their character and needs: Noranda is orderly and precise, Rouyn is much more unruly! In 1986, they merged to form Rouyn-Noranda. The architecture is rich and diverse. From Boomtown to Craftsman bungalow, through Art Deco, the architectural styles reflect this cultural mosaic. Thus, the built heritage is a testament to the economic and cultural development of the city through its evolution and the contributions of its many contributors.
